“Giant Brumbies* loose forward Jone Tawake has gone to extreme measures to gain a place in Australia's World Cup team next year - having his finger amputated.
The Fijian-born No.8 was in impressive form for the Brumbies in the Super 14 this year before suffering a dislocated finger in a training mishap.
The injury required surgery and that's where Tawake's trouble escalated. There was complications during the operation which was further exacerbated by an infection to the wound.
The end result meant Tawake faced either a long, difficult and potentially unsuccessful rehabilitation program or could have the finger removed.
The 24-year-old chose the latter, much to the amazement of his team-mates.”

Okay. Wow.
All I can say is that Tawake better be selected for the World Cup team...because this is true sacrifice, a literal pound of flesh (Tawake is a big guy) but it’s what he wants most and what he’s willing to give up...and what does the right hand ring finger do anyway?
But O Lord...I couldn’t imagine being faced with such a decision.
I'm not talking reality or semi reality here...we've all given up time with our loved ones or sleep or free time, etc for work.
This is surreal. This man gave up his finger (which, by the way would have healed in time but he wouldn't be playing professional rugby) for a shot at goal.
Remember, his place in the team is not guaranteed.
Ahh Forwards. They're a tough bunch.
What do I want to be most of all? What would I give up to be this?
I want to be a Wallaby. (Australian male rugby player not marsupial...) but would I give up my womanhood?
Maybe. Kidding.
No, absolutely definitely NO.
I couldn’t wear my 42 pairs of boots then (and the men faint in disbelief...maybe some women too...) nor my collection of vintage ballgowns and please, no cross dressing comments.
If you had to choose, what would you give up for a chance to get what you want most?
