Fiji's coup de grace Welshed the deal
October 1st 2007 22:30
Twas a coup de ta ta...see ya later!
I've been told by friends living in Fiji that the entire country went off!!...errupted like the fireworks that lit up the South Pacific sky in the wee hours of the morning.
Fiji is passionate about Rugby and this win? Well...the team might as well have won the World Cup, the celebrations were that joyous. A Quarter Final placing in a RWC has been a wait of 20 years...and Fiji desperately needed a moment of unity. For peace sake.
...BUT...on field...it was war. Ferocious and damn this word is overused but...it.was. PASSIONATE Rugby. One of the best matches so far.
Alas, once was powerhouse Wales now faces the music back home and the violins are out for Coach Gareth Jenkins who has supposedly been fired. That's right sportsfans...he's been dumped faster than a Hilton hand towel. Read that how you want.
I do feel terrible for one of my favourite players ever, Welsh Captain Gareth Thomas but at least now he can go get his teeth fixed! (The man has a gorgeous physique but hardly any teeth. I guess he figures "why bother when they're just going to get knocked out again??")
This was Thomas' 100th test match and he was hoping for fireworks...almost happened, Wales did come back in the game and Thomas played a huge part in that but...the deal was...welshed.
Thomas said;
This was the match Fiji saved their energy...and their best players...for. I must say I was thrilled to see Fiji hold it together for the 80minutes. They're prone to falling apart but the team gelled, veni-d and vici-d at the right time, in all the right places.
Even though Wales had the superior scrum, they were out-run in open play except when Fiji was reduced to 14 men just before half-time when flanker Apakusi Qera was yellow-carded for kicking out.
This was a bit unfair because, apart from the Welsh player being a contender for next year's Oscar for Best Actor in a Drama...it wasn't Qera's knee that did the damage...it was a teammate's elbow that connected. Besides...what Qera did was instinct not intent.
The Welsh drama queen was rushing in off side anyway...well that's what it looked like to me...with full intention of causing Qera some damage. Damage like a rabbit would do to a bear.
The Welsh flyhalf was true to his name and kept Hook-ing the ball to the left, to the right, everywhere but dead centre. That's gotta hurt. Those points may have made all the difference.
Oh well. There's always next World Cup. As George, King of the Sledge-ungle would say; 4 more years boys.
Fiji will now face the Springboks (South Africa) in the last eight in Marseille on October 7... and that match will be like watching a Bula* in a shiner shop.
*Bula - Fijian word for hello. Shiner - what the Boks like to do to faces.
Please Note:
As you can see, I don't provide blow by blow match analysis. You can find that anywhere. What I provide is entertainment. The value? You be the judge.

Fiji 38 - 34 Wales
oh come on man...I'm losing my dignity, leave me my shorts! Mark Jones gets tackled by Ifereimi Rawaqa

We made some serious errors and the defence was not up to standard...We made the wrong decisions.
In my career we have had some highs and lows and this is one of the lows.

It looks like a try...but thanks to Captain Gareth Thomas, Seremaia Bai didn't suceed. Tackled short of the line.
