George Gregan: The Comeback King
July 18th 2007 14:49
Ahhh George...he definitely is the Comeback King...in more ways than one...and the All Blacks are shaking in their studded boots...and I hate that he will soon be the Gonehalfback King....

No he's not.
...he's just smiling in that this-too-shall-pass way of his...

George Gregan is far too polite and polished to ever admit it, but the Wallabies halfback is having the last laugh.
No he's not.
...he's just smiling in that this-too-shall-pass way of his...
For the past two or three years the Sydney media have called for Gregan to be dumped from the Wallabies.
They felt he had lost his punch. That he crabbed across the field too much, was a passer but never a runner, and as a result didn't threaten the defence.
The criticism was often valid, but no one was able to provide the name of the bloke who would play halfback for Australia ahead of Gregan.
Coach John Connolly thought he knew when he used Matt Giteau there against Wales in June, but it was soon apparent Giteau's best place is in the midfield.
So Gregan is back and the pesky tormentor of the All Blacks and their fans will be at the World Cup – possibly even as Wallabies skipper.
Gregan has a special link to the All Blacks since he burst into our lounge rooms with THAT tackle on Jeff Wilson in 1994.
Comeback #2:
He conjured one of the greatest sledges when he strode through the All Blacks ruck in the dying minutes of Australia's 22-10 World Cup semifinal victory in 2003 reminding them it would be "four more years, boys" till they had a chance to win the World Cup again.

...And he will be at Eden Park again on Saturday in his final Bledisloe Cup test.
With Australia one-up in the two-test series Gregan has the chance to bookmark that part of his career with a win again.
The All Blacks are $1.20 favourites with Australia paying $4.20, but given Gregan's remarkable career, would you bet against him?
Well would ya...punk?

I just checked my email and say you had a new post up so I'll be visiting soon....I love your posts (and damn...still salivating over those patchwork dresses...)
I love writing this time of night...everyone is asleep and it's really quiet...and I had gone out earlier.
Of course if my husband was home I wouldn't be here!

I'm so accustomed to seeing Gregan with a shaved head, he looks really strange with hair. But that is some tackle (and great footage of the try attempt itself).
I'm not that familiar with how much sledging goes on in Rugby but I'm familair with how much of it used to (and still does) go on in cricket. I'll see if I can locate an email about the greatest cricket sledges. It was such a purler of an email. And, from memory, there was a dropped catch in a semi final of the Cricket World Cup by a South African player, and one of the Aussie's said to him, 'You just dropped the World Cup'.

Rugby World Cup 2007
Man...I thought my sleeping patterns were wonky (technical term)...whatchu doin' 'wake boy?
I actually remember Gregan with hair! It does look strange...I think he shaved it for a charity and then just kept the look...at least no one can grab it!
Oh woah...sledging in Rugby?...man...
DDH has told me many many many stories of the things that get said in scrums...some I just cannot say here...
And I love the fact that the players will sledge each other (wittily of course) on field yet are firm friends off field.
Gregan and Justin Marshall (ex half back for the Blacks) are great friends but they would give each other so much shit on field.
...and they sledge each other off field...like George Smith saying to me [[[clang]]] -did you hear the name drop- when he saw what I was carrying in my hand..."did you get that in the bargain bin?"...
I was carrying Stephen's book and Stephen was standing just behind George...
I hope you find that email of cricket sledges...something like that was said in Rugby but it was about the Bledisloe and I think Eales said it...
Anyway...I'm outta here babe...sleep well...
