This is a biased look at Rugby (from a Gamma point of view...hence the fuschia) and I make no apologies for that. Go The Wallabies! Go The Brumbies!...and ouch...Stephen Larkham...

Week 4 schedule: Eddie Jones v ARU

February 19th 2007 11:54
....well...Eddie Jones is throwing stones and boy does he have some...not quite sure what's happening with the little man but lately, he's been raging war with everybody.

First it was Jones v Connoly; Coach against Coach
Then it was Jones v Gregan; Coach against Captain
Now this.

Reds coach Eddie Jones is facing suspension and a $10,000 fine from the Australian Rugby Union for castigating Sydney referee Matt Goddard after Saturday night's loss to ACT in Brisbane.

$10,000 for speaking the truth and calling a spade a useless tool??
Come on....

Jones made a scathing attack on Goddard's performance on television, radio and at the official media conference, where he even taunted the ARU into fining him over his comments.

It was amusing.
Eddie showed the first signs of emotion, ever...he was furious...and...as much I hate to admit it, he was right.
Whoever said that love is blind hadn't met a rugby referee....

The ARU this morning is expected to charge Jones with breaches of the union's code of conduct.

Jones began his attack on Goddard by saying: "How much is the fine? I'll have to check with my accountant … Whatever you have to pay, I'll pay twice. I thought it [the refereeing] was outrageous."

The ref, Matt Goddard, kept penalising the Reds scrum and accusing the Front row of collapsing the scrum.
A scrum 'collapses' when either Front row goes to ground instead of pushing against the force of the other.
Usually the props try to force this without getting caught.
First rule of scrum when caught collapsing?
Denial. Then disgust. Shake your head a few times.

Goddard also accused Rodney Blake (Reds #3 tighthead prop) aka 1.90m 130kgs Rodzilla of "packing too low"....because oh yes, the rest of us forgot that a scrum engages standing up.

Sheesh.

Jones's comments have also antagonised ARU officials. Jones's relationship with the ARU is fractious after being sacked as Wallabies coach at the end of 2005.

Gary Flowers, the ARU Chief Executive, also the SANZAR chief executive officer, said yesterday the ARU and SANZAR, which runs the Super 14, frowned upon coaches targeting referees.

"The SANZAR countries stressed before the Super 14 … started this year that there would be zero tolerance of adverse public comments of referees," Flowers said.

Yes. The Head Honcho of Australian Rugby is named Flowers.

ACT coach Laurie Fisher wasn't also entirely impressed with the refereeing performance, particularly during a scuffle in the first half.

"I saw [Queensland centre] Ben Tune throw a lot of punches and escape scot-free," Fisher said. "So I'm a little perplexed that a person can throw so many punches and not be spoken to by the referee at all."

...because the ref didn't see him....why he didn't he see him?
All together now...

That's as entertaining as it is informative ... (I'm gradually learning the rules ... *

What is it with the Administrators in Australian sports in general where the Refs/Umpie's performance (when obviously not up-to-scratch) is off-limits to criticism from the Coaches or Players of a Team that has obviously been robbed of a win? ... Don't they shoot the refs overseas for that sort of stuff? ...

Haven't all the codes been sanitised enough, already? ... It's getting to the stage where a 'non-contact' sport like netball has more hits on the field than any of the male codes.

No wonder players get into the biffo during the breaks if they're not allowed to touch each other on the field. They'll be awarding penalites for patting your own teammate on the bum next ...

There's none so blind as those who do not wish to see.
