Not just a man's game...
October 12th 2006 05:05
I hate to come across all damn-this-double-layer-glass-ceiling but why are there not more women involved in rugby media?
I'm pretty sure this world-wide, not just in Australia.
Women are the backbone of the rugby body.
As mothers, we alternate between cheering and (silently) fearing. And swearing when Napisan doesn’t work on stained jerseys.
As wives/partners we marvel at how our gentlemen morph into fearless gladiators, but still wince at the thought of a Brazillian.
As fans, our battle cries can be heard stadium wide but apparently not loud enough to be heard in the Australian media.
Why don’t women interview the players?
Is there a worry we’re going to melt faced with all that testosterone?
Rugby women are not groupies nor cheerleaders. We have pride and dignity and just because I’m ogling Stephen Larkham’s* thighs doesn’t mean I’m not equally appreciative of his incredible talent and brilliance.
Yeah...I really believe that Sharapova’s appeal is in her backhand...
Or is because women supposedly don’t get the male ‘warrior psyche’? We’re too soft to understand the need for aggression in sport right?
Hello? Have you ever been at a designer clearance sale? And excuse me, Netball is scary. And don’t get me started on shopping centre parking spots...
Don't underestimate us women...we know the fundamentals...
We know the lower the number the tougher the man....and woman.
We know all wingers, even bald ones, carry combs in their pockets.
We know that referees come from the Helen Keller School of Visual Decision.
We know why Nobody’s** perfect and why MacQueen was King.
I am an ordinary woman with an extraordinary love of the game they play in heaven. My pearly gate is a goalpost. When I’m not dreaming about being a Wallaby, I help my husband restore Jaguars and scour op-shops for vintage ballgowns and collect Wonder Woman comics. Oh and I'm a mother to 5 future Wallabies. Not that there's any pressure on them...
Perhaps if I’m really good, in my next life I’ll come back as a Wallaby forward. And if I’m really really good, I’ll still be female!
*The only man worthy of being called an Honorary Forward. Interview coming soon.
**Nobody aka John Eales aka Legend aka "Please come back!"

Rugby World Cup 2007
...thank you also for the comment on your site about my explanation...had to clarify because unfortunately Rugby is seen as a violent sport. It's aggressive, sure, but not mindless.
And I love it.
