RWC Pool Results Ladder (& how they get there)
September 25th 2007 21:00
Hello sportsfans...
Here are the standings so far;
A question has been asked as to how these pool groupings are chosen (because some of the match-ups seem a bit mountain v molehill) so without further ado...here's how;
The RWC 07 features 20 nations competing over a month in the host nation(s). Majority of the matches are in France but some have been played in Cardiff, Wales.
The current format allows for eight of the 20 available positions to be filled by automatic qualification. These are the eight quarter finalists of the previous tournament.
The remaining 12 positions are filled by continental qualifying tournaments.
Positions are filled by three teams from the Americas, one from Asia, one from Africa, three from Europe and two from Oceania.
Another two places are allocated for repechage*, which allows participants that failed to meet qualifying standards by a small margin, to continue to the next round.
*French repechage, literal re-fishing, meaning "to rescue" or "to save"
The first repechage place is determined by a match between the runners-up from the Africa and Europe qualifying tournaments, with that winner then playing the Americas runner-up to determine the place.
The second repechage position is determined between the runners-up from the Asia and Oceania qualifiers.
There are two stages, a group and a knock-out. Nations are divided into four pools, A through to D, of five nations each. (view pool rankings above)
The pool allocation system seeds teams ranked one through four from the previous tournament into A through D pools respectively.
So for '07...these 4 were England, Australia, New Zealand and France, from the '03 RWC.
The other four automatic entrants -the losing quarter-finalists from the previous tournament- are drawn into pools at random.
The remaining positions in each pool are filled by the qualifiers.
Nations play four pool games, playing their respective pool members once. A bonus points system is used during pool play. If two or more teams are level on points, a system of criteria is used to determine the higher rank. Please don't ask me what the criteria entails bcause I don't have the faintest f**king clue. With me so far?
...just keeping you on your...er...tips...
The winner and runner-up of each pool enters the knock-out stage. The knock-out stage consists of quarter- and semi-finals, and then the final.
Should a tie result during an event in the knock-out stages, the winner is determined through extra time. Should that fail, sudden death begins when the next team to score any points is declared the winner and this is when a kicking competition ensus. Which is why that pansy naff ponce Wilkinson did what he did and I don't want to talk about it.
The winner of each pool is placed against a runner-up of a different pool in a quarter-final.
The winner of each quarter-final goes on to the semi-finals, where the respective winners proceed to the final.
Losers of the semi-finals contest for third place. This is called the 'Bronze Final'...or as I like to call it...The Better Luck Next Time aTrophy.
