Larkham Out For 2. Hopefully Only 2.
September 26th 2007 11:39
...or else I'm out for the count.
You may be aware that Stephen Larkham is out with a knee injury, which is why he was unable to play v Japan and v Wales.
If you're not aware then you should at least know the what and the why. And please remain alert.
- this image was taken on Tuesday 25/09 by a very lucky and observant fan in Montpellier France. Alas not by a Rucks and Rolls fan. Scroll mouse over image to see credit. Link provided to observant&%$#*& fan's post.
Larkham underwent an arthroscopy to remove a small floating bone fragment in his knee (which caused it to lock up) on the Sunday (16/09) after the Wallabies v Japan match.
The injury occurred on Friday during kicking practise and is an aggravation of an old injury. Thus he was ruled out of that match and the Wallabies v Wales one.
Subsequent reports had him almost match fit and ready to take on Canada this weekend in Bordeaux and Australian Rugby hearts were...um...heartened at the good news. Larkham is The Key (no "I'm the lock" jokes please) to a successful Wallabies campaign. I should not and will not have to explain why.
However, Kleenex tissue sales are set to soar and the drought may be broken due to the latest news.
Eight days after the first arthroscopy, Larkham returned to hospital yesterday for a second operation after his knee became infected and he is not expected to be fit until at least the semi-final stage, which is 2 matches away.
This is how Coach John Connolly feels about this.
And this is how I feel.
After the operation, Larkham was treated with antibiotics and will remain in hospital for another day or two.
The symptoms of the infection flared yesterday when he was due to resume running in a bid to return off the bench against Canada. (This was the scene of the first photo op)
Coach Connolly said;
Like a quilt.
Wallabies medical officer Dr Martin Raftery explained the infection was an unlucky result of Larkham's initial arthroscopy.
No. Never winning the lottery is unlucky. This is malpractise.
Best case scenario...Larkham will be well, in time for a possible semi-final clash against the...gulp... All Blacks but he may have to come off the bench.
Berrick Barnes has earned the right to starting line-up but we will eventually need Larkham's experience, fearlessness, flair, brain, quick thinking, quick hands, quickening of the pulse (oh...that's just me), grace under pressure, grace while moving, grace while blinking to counteract a Blacks offensive.
Worst case scenario...I'll see you guys on my new knitting blog.

Coach Connolly said;
"We hope he will be out (of hospital) tomorrow but he definitely won't be considered for this weekend or the following weekend,
"He got up yesterday morning to start running. It was sore and it as just the start of an infection and he spent the night in there getting treated. He's very disappointed obviously, he was coming along quite well.

Wallabies medical officer Dr Martin Raftery explained the infection was an unlucky result of Larkham's initial arthroscopy.
While the infection was external, between the skin and the knee capsule, fluid needed to be flushed through the knee to ensure the infection hadn't penetrated the joint's casing.
"It's a recognised complication of surgery and whenever you do any surgery one of the risks is infection," Dr Raftery said.
"You have bugs on your skin and when you insert a foreign instrument into your body you can take those bugs through to your knee joint and that's what's happened.
"It's just unlucky."

You could make anything interesting ... even knitting.
I heard about the Lark and his wee problem, and immediately thought of you.
My thoughts are with you and your knitting fingers.

I definitely agree with everything...and especially this;
Go Tonga!!!
They need to avenge their nightmarish '99 RWC loss to England.
Thanks for coming by buddy.

Nice yarn by the way.
I can see a pattern starting to develop here.
While the whole World Cup result is far from stitched up for the Wallabies - it would be a knitwit who would suggest Barnes be given a ribbing.
Purls of wisdom my sweet, purls of wisdom.

If Canada wins this weekend...they'll surprise themselves...but stranger things have happened. Paris Hilton is now a humanitarian philanthropist.
