This is a biased look at Rugby (from a Gamma point of view...hence the fuschia) and I make no apologies for that. Go The Wallabies! Go The Brumbies!...and ouch...Stephen Larkham...

Stephen Larkham: A Demi God Speaks.

June 27th 2007 03:57
Watch this video...to get an idea of why I think this man is just...well...just who he is.

Stephen Larkham aka Demi God (original image cropped courtesy of ARU)

I give me you......

Stephen Larkham.....

....and ignore the ad at the end...it's kinda funny though...

You could never tell that this Man is a millionaire elite sportsperson....respected the world over for his sporting prowess and humble manner....I mean...where's the bling (hate that word), the bluster?

Clearly he doesn't subscribe to the Beckham Code of Excess Pool.
Thank God.

I met a gorgeous woman (funny, beautiful, very intelligent - a financial analyst) a few weeks ago (at the premiere of my darling friend's film).
This lovely woman is a mad Rugby fan...and a BRUMBIES fan...and....she knows Stephen Larkham because their families live in the same area and she grew up knowing them.

Naturally she and I hit it off really well.

Because she's funny. Okay?

...she did tell me that the Larkham family is like that. High achievers yet humble.
They're welcoming and happy to do and be, not just exist but make no great shakes about it.

I have said this before (...many times...), Stephen Larkham is a genius.
(literally. His IQ is genius percantile. I know this because mine is too.

....hahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahaha...ah sheesh I crack myself up
...)

And he is humble. Shy. Modest. Unassuming. Brilliant.

Gorgeous.

...and yes, that is his wife Jacqueline and 2 daughters.

And have I mentioned I'll be watching Scottish Rugby next year?

...ach jimmy...ya cannae handa a lass a granda man...ahhh.....

(well, you can but I'm married to him...)

After watching that video? I'm turning gay again.

I'm not a Rugy expert but I know a bit about sport, and a bit about virtues (like humility - only on a theoretical level).

Seriously though? After watching that video?

Larkham is two steps ahead of most players on the field. And a hundred steps ahead of nearly all of them off the field.

There's a couple of Aussie Rules players who come to mind after watching that video, yet neither of them had the combined attributes of Larkham.

1. David Rhyce-Jones. He used to always look like he was just loping around (he was just two steps ahead of everyone else. It's a brain-processing, peripheral vision and hand-to-eye coordination thing). Dermott Brereton is considered one of the great names in grand-final football (and in Melbourne bedrooms?), but has everyone forgotten how Rhyce-Jones gave him an absolute bath in a grand final with his laconic loping approach? Nup, they remember the day he broke Greg Williams jaw. Irony of ironies. They ended up on the same team.

I love the way Larkham scores a try. In the most unassuming manner possible.

2. Ted Whitten. (Mr Football in Aussie Rules). A complete Larrikin and thug on the field, but the most humble, generous and thoughtful soul off the field.

Okay, that's my sporting comment over for another month. Bloody hell, July is only a few days away.

Hiya KW...

He is humble and lovely.
...sigh...

Name drop time [[[clang]]]...when I interviewed him ...sigh... I asked him how he feels about his 'celebrity status'...he was mortified at being thought of this way.

His words; "I'm just a Rugby player"

...but in the sporting world...he is a bonafide celebrity. He just chooses not to be.

Then I asked him if he could take his shirt off.

I am so kidding!!!!!!!

...and I'm far too professional to even think such thoughts whilst in work mode....

And dayam....does he ever fill out a pair of cargo pants nicely!!!!!!

Oh hell yeahhhhh....

much warmth hon...

David darlin'...

Careful. You're giving your...game away.

Only natural athletes can recognise an attribute like this;
He used to always look like he was just loping around (he was just two steps ahead of everyone else. It's a brain-processing, peripheral vision and hand-to-eye coordination thing)

...and this...
I love the way Larkham scores a try. In the most unassuming manner possible.

No pomp. No ceremony. No sweat.

I know... ... a bit about virtues (like humility - only on a theoretical level).

That's practical advice.

Humility on a practical level is best served with self confidence and on a platter of pulchritude.

What?
....never mind...

Be well sugah

Dusky D,

I'm impressed with his moves. The "effortless" way he scores that try..nice.

Well I used to know a fellow snow skier (an old boyfriend, actually) ...anyeeeway, he ski-ed like a God, - just like that try, there - smooth as you like, cool, calm and collected.

A natural?

Not really, he worked damned harder than anyone else I knew (myself included) and as far as 'skiing style' goes, btw *chuckle* my darling, I have absolutely none... it's like a controlled fall the whole way - even after years of practice *lol* *cracking myself up* ooh the stories I could tell ....

He's okay, .. but do not fear, I'm not going to take him off you, okay?
He's voice is a bit high pitched for me...

Fancy him going to the land of Nod?

Coincidence, mai wee?

Hi LL...

Well...overnight success can take up to 10 years...but, some people are just born with an innate ability to just make everything they do...effortless.

Watching Larkham 'live'...it looks like he's moving in slow motion and it's not until you look at his opponents falling like skittles by the wayside, that you get an idea of how fast and smoothly he really moves.

Like a hot knife through butter.

...but yes...as with everything...practise and hard work and diligence and a need and want to learn... makes perfect.

Still...there is a difference between natural ability and nurtured ability.

The 'it' factor.

You either have it or you do whatever it takes to get it. If you want it.
...and still...sometimes, it's not enough.

Try as I might and as good a waterskiier as I am...I cannot do beach starts nor barefoot.
I just don't have the 'feel' for it...yet I have natural balance which got me up and out of the water first go.

The eldest boy...oh man...his ability to just up and go is absolute beauty to behold.
His first time ever wake & snow boarding, water and snow skiing....he was up and off.

The others need a little more time but they've inherited an incrdible athletic ability.
DDH has a natural athletic ability.

I'm not bragging. I just know their capabilities. It amazes me to watch them.

It does upset me a bit that our boys who have inherited a natural Rugby intelligence relied too much on their ability...and forgot about sacrifice, diligence and perseverance.

I'm fairly good on snow, in terms of ability...not sure about style as I have really weird feet that 'fan' out so it's quite difficlut for me to place both feet facing forwards!...

...but being able to fly down a slope in complete control of your own body and knowing that the only reason you will stack is an outside factor (like ice, trees, other skiiers!)...is quite a rush.

I really hate falling...unless I'm learning something new.
Then I think it's essential to fall, to know that you are pushing yourself. If you don't fall then you don't learn what you did 'wrong'.
...but still...I haven't had the guts to attack a black diamond run.
And I'm fine with that.

It's also about fear.

If I intended to compete in the Olympics then I would not conquer but absorb the fear and just go for it!

The one thing that natural athletes have is a healthy respect for fear.

They use it to propel and stimulate.
They don't let it overcome them.

Fear creates hesitation at the wrong times and hesitation breeds fear at the wrong times.
...fear wouldn't dare stop them because fear is merely a manifestation of self doubt...

However, those without fear are either lying or mutants. Or deadl.

Natural athletes who have an understanding of the fear factor are also good students.

They are willing to learn because they understand that although their ability does give them an edge...that edge needs to be constantly honed and sharpened to ensure longevity.

I know brilliant genius or bordering on genius people who have not done as well in school (for example) as other students who have studied non stop for a year.

...where am I going with this?....hmmmm....

Either way...it doesn't matter whether you have natural or nurtured ability.

It's what you do with it.

It's funny you said that about his voice.
I have a big thing for timbre and tones of voice.

Larkham actually has a deeper voice than that.

Unfortunately because he is so camera shy, he folds in to himself and 'cuts' off his voice...he really does not understand the media interest in him.

He understands the sporting accolades he receives... because that would be just false modesty if he didn't.

Fancy him going to the land of Nod?
Coincidence, mai wee?

...mais non...je ne comprends pas...quelle coincidence?

Hope you're well LL

Oh that's okay, DD, interesting reading, as always...

I'll let the oter ting go for now...see where you git wi' it lassie...

I'm fairly good on snow, in terms of ability...not sure about style as I have really weird feet that 'fan' out so it's quite difficlut for me to place both feet facing forwards!...
Absolutely why I have no style...

*chuckle* Ooh for the love of Larkham Pete, don't get me started on beach starts...*laughing OUT LOUD Oh the stories I could tell.

Falling down the side of a mountiain (in a semi-controlled way?) I have to say that sometimes...just sometimes... better than sex.

LM(ears)O picturing the pair of us attempting our first black run together, fanned feet at the ready...! *hillarious*

*Too funny* at my age... I haven't gotten onto ski's of either sort now for over two decades, that's nearly 9,000 days.

Used to ski near Sackville... and spend Friday nights at the Wiseman Ferry Hotel. Aah what sweet memories, what a fun time we all had... such lovely warm memories to relive now, when it's cold. Brrr!

It's great that your kids have picked it up easily... and I agree with you that natural talent is one thing, nurtuing it and helping it to grow and become perfect, is a must... in any field : physical or mental.

Better go, the little one wants to re-watch Bride and Prejudice again... *gag* seven times is enough 'Help!"

much warmth, thanks for the laugh..

Have a good evening.

Hey Dusk,

I was Larkham talking about stuff on Sports Tonight last night.

He seemed like you say, humble, poised and intelligent. Not simply a man, a man amongst men.

Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said. Like JoshZ, I also saw SL on the news the other night making a few comments and I'll admit I watched closely, just because you have made him sound so wonderful.

He does seem like a remarkably unassuming and down-to-earth bloke.

You could never tell that this Man is a millionaire elite sportsperson....respected the world over for his sporting prowess and humble manner....I mean...where's the bling (hate that word), the bluster?
It makes a nice change. (And I hate that word too)
Take care. xxxxx
