Rugby Players Are Works of Art...

February 2nd 2007 03:27
Now, as far as I am concerned (and that's pretty far out...), Rugby Union is Art in motion....for me, nothing matches the power, the grace, the fluidity, the strength, the passion, the Larkham brilliance, the Larkham beauty...you get the picture.

Ha. punache.

When a wild horse sits still....this is what happens....a collaboration between Brumbies skipper Stirling Mortlock and Queensland artist Di West.....

from ninemsn.com.au

West, a professional artist and sculptor for much of the past decade, has been fascinated by the structure and shape of Mortlock's face.

Anyway she contacted Mortlock to see if he would do a portrait sitting, to which he readily agreed.

The results of this (pictured right) will be loaded on to the back of a truck headed for Sydney for the prestigious Archibald Prize in Sydney.

West isn't sure how it will rate with the judges, or whether it will be hung, but like all those Super 14 teams at this time of the year it's in with a chance.

I like the portrait, it is quite evocative with its use of light and shadow.

I love it..the suble exaggeration of his characteristic features gives it an almost caricature-like look, yet it's still quite accurate in its depiction...can't wait too see how it goes with the Archibald...

Dusk? ...

A couple of things? ...

This:

by...um...his parents?

Priceless.

And secondly?

Do you really think it's advisable or prudent to reveal katyzzz's real name on your blog? *

If that portrait wins the Archibald this year? I'm submitting the following private one I drew of Larkham on MS Paint, okay? ... ***

Um? By his mentor? *

Hey Dusk,

anything that draws on our convictions, our passion, our ability and determination is art.

Rugby can do this (I played rugby for a year when I lived in new zealand, being a not overly large white fulla from australia didn't always help).

Good to read your work Dusk,

JZ

Dusk,

the portrait looks a little bit like Campo.

I'm guessing from the fact that he's an oil painting that Mortlock is not a forward.

David's Art looks like a pair of undies or a dog's breakfast. (Tautology.)

Fly fully not half.

All Black and Highlanders hooker is a hard man, but he posed naked for an artist at the end of last year. It seems art and rugby are closely related!

Hi Ninabelle...

I agree to the portrait being evocative but did you check out the "real work of art"...now that's provocative...shadow light....I better stop or else I'll be up for The Archribald Prize!!

Thanks for coming by Nina, hope you're having a great weekend.

Hi Queen Kong...

I am not sure if I like it but I too am curious as to how it will do...I feel the artist has not captured the warmth and humour that Mortlock is all about.

He is Stirling by name not by nature...and I'm not even that big a fan of his...but he is Captain of the Brumbies.

Go The Brumbies!!....
they play the Chiefs in about...hmmm...24minutes... gotta go...

Have a great weekend Sisi.

giNORMous....

Mortlock is a back.

Forwards are more paintstrippers than oil paintings!

Hope you are well ParaNORMal.

Boy it's a tough life being an artist .. ***

Comments like 'no comment' almost make me wish I'd get criticism for my works of art ... ***

HI DuskyD,

..this post caught my eye yesterday as I was signing off ... had to dash ... it was full moon, you know. and there was some primal drumming to be done and meditations to be had.

Back now and again this picture caught my eye. I think it has a chance of winning, there is something about it that draws - at least - um, yeah, *lol* I see your [parental] point!

It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Great Post!

Hope your weekend is inspired.

Hi LL...

That weekend was very inspired, thank you...twas the celebration of another year in my life...

Yes this portrait is very eye-catching but as I said in another comment (above) it doesn't quite capture the warmth of Stirling Mortlock...it makes him look rather...um...steely...

Be well LL

Dusk
