2 of The Super Australian Teams of The Super 14.
January 30th 2007 07:27
Just to recap, just in case you can't be bothered rereading (or for that matter, reading my Super 14 History post)...
The Super 14 is the largest Rugby Union championship in the Southern Hemisphere, made up of 14 provincial teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Each team plays 13 games during the regular season, which runs for 14 weeks
Australia has 4 teams in the Super 14 Comp.
Listed here in no particular order....but the best first. tee hee.
The Brumbies (for sponsorship reasons referred to as CA Brumbies) are based in Canberra, Australia and named for the wild horses which inhabit Canberra's hinterland.
The team represents the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and southern New South Wales (NSW) regions.
The Brumbies were formed in 1996 to provide a third Australian franchise for the newly-formed Super 12 (now Super 14) competition.
Since then, they have reached five finals and won two, being the only Australian team to have done so.
And they will always be my team.

The New South Wales Waratahs (referred to as HSBC Waratahs for sponsorship reasons) represent most of NSW in the Super 14 (formerly Super 12) competition (those regions not represented by the Brumbies)
Waratahs has historically been the name for the New South Wales Rugby Union (NSWRU) representative team, and became the name for the New South Wales team when it entered the Super Six, Super 10 and Super 12 competitions. The name and emblem comes from the Waratah, the NSW state flower.
For some reason, The Waratahs have never won a Super comp. Considering that they have come so close and have had so many amazing players, it's a bit odd. They came very close last year but again...
They should be my team but they're not. Still support them though.
Team colours: sky and navy blue, white (away games)
Home ground: Aussie Stadium, Sydney
Coach: Ewen McKenzie
Captain: Phil Waugh
(Waugh is a Legend and very very deserving of Captaincy. The Tahs might just hoist the trophy under his leadership. I hope not. I want the Brumbies to win)
History:
2006 - 3rd
2005 - runners up
2004 - 8th
Notable players/Wallabies
Phil Waugh, Lote Tuqiri, Al Baxter, Rocky Elsom, Peter Hewat (not Wallaby but should be), Daniel Vickerman and David Lyons (both injured), Morgan Turunui, Adam Freier, Wycliff Palu.
Legend Players Retired or O/S:
Matt Burke, Chris Whitaker,
First Match:
Sat Feb 3, 4:10am in Johannesburg
Waratahs v Lions (formerly Jo'burg Cats)
Player to watch:
Phil Waugh as Captain
***********************************************************************************
The Brumbies and The Waratahs provide the Wallabies numbers.
Some years, the entire backline and front row have been made up of Brumbies players.
It is important to note that the players don't necessarily come from these regions they play for.
For instance, Gregan comes from Sydney and plays for Canberra. Daniel Vickerman was born in South Africa and when not injured plays for NSW. Larkham comes from Heaven, resides in NSW and plays for Canberra....
Now on to the next two....
