This is a biased look at Rugby (from a Gamma point of view...hence the fuschia) and I make no apologies for that. Go The Wallabies! Go The Brumbies!...and ouch...Stephen Larkham...

Super 14 Teams (cont.) Hey SA...Molweni!

January 31st 2007 03:29
There is only thing I will say I like about the South African teams.....I like, no....love the South African anthem. "Nkosi Sikelel iAfrica..."
That's the only reason I will watch their games if Larkham an Australian team isn't playing.
Plus this is the only time I will support a New Zealand team.
Man....I am so biased.
Oh well. This ain't no double sided coin kiddo.
This is war.

South Africa

The Bulls

The Bulls, known as the Vodacom Bulls, are based in Pretoria and play their home matches at Loftus Versfeld.

The team is centred around the Blue Bulls union (Pretoria plus Limpopo Province....I love that name..."and that player limpopo-ed off the field..."), but also draws players from the Falcons (representing the East Rand).

After pretty much sucking for most the Super 12 comp, they've pulled their socks (sucks?) up since Super 14.
By the last round of the 2006 season, the Bulls, along with the Brumbies and Sharks were all in contention to take the fourth and final position on the ladder to make the semi-finals.

Unfortunately The Bulls lost to the bastards Crusaders but there's always this year. No not really. I want the Brumbies to win.

Coach: Heyneke Meyer
Captain: Victor Matfield

Notable players:
Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Fourie du Preez, Jacques Cronje

Notable Retired or O/S players:
...can't think of any...oh yeah...Jannie de Beer...don't know what ales him..rough diamond that one...!

The Sharks

The Sharks are based in Durban and centred around the Natal Sharks union, also based in Durban and drawing players from all of KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Yes, this doesn't mean much to me either but please do not stop reading because you are going to cack yourself at this....

After being informally called the Banana Boys for a century, some felt it was time for a change.

The Banana Boys?? The Banana Boys!!!

The Sharks branding was the brain child of Terry Kukle, the owner of Tag International. After assessing international marketing trends, Kukle presented this strategy to the council of the Natal Rugby Union. After many meetings a decision was finally made to go ahead with the new branding. The local press at first were very hesitant to accept the new name and branding, but after a very successful season and great products and promotions the Sharks were embraced by all.

The Sharks' marketing has been widely acknowledged in marketing and rugby circles as best practice and included as a successful case study in many marketing text books.

Slipping Moving on.

They have never won the Super 12 competition, but have reached the final twice, as Natal in 1996 (v Auckland Blues) and as the Sharks in 2001(v Brumbies...go The Brumbies!!)

Coach: Dick Muir (very calm guy...very...demure...)
Captain: John Smit.

Okay hold the banana phone...I do like this man. Smit is a legend. A front rower and also the Springboks Captain. He's funny, smart and he's kinda hot...in a Oh My God is that a man or kil-man-jaro way...

Notable players:
John Smit,
Percy pansy-look-at-me-pretty-boy Montgomery
(what do you mean "don't I like him?"...yeah, I like him...I like him a lot when he's at the bottom of a maul. Ladies I suppose you want a photo of him...Percy the Pansy has been described as the SuperModel of SA rugby. Whatever. He's a little pansy boy to me.)

The Stormers

The Stormers, for sponsorship reasons referred to as Vodacom Stormers, are based in Cape Town and centred around the Western Province union, but also draw players from the Boland Cavaliers (covering the Cape Winelands and West Coast districts, with home matches in Wellington).

They have never reached the final of the Super 12 competition, having been eliminated in the semi-finals in their best two years, 1999 and 2004.
Don't really know what to add...not a fan of this team...don't follow them...I like fine weather. Ha!

Coach: Kobus van der Merwe
Captain: Luke Watson

Notable players:
De Wet Barry (...I kid you not...)
Jean de Villiers
Breyton Paulse

The Lions

The Lions, formerly known as the Cats through the 2006 season, are based in Johannesburg, and have always been centred around the Lions union (Johannesburg), drawing players from that union since the inception of the competition as Super 12 in 1996.

They have not achieved great success in the Super 12 competition, finishing on the bottom of the table three times, with their best performances being in 2000 and 2001, when they reached the semi-finals. Basically...they suck.

Hopefully a new name makes them rumble in the jungle...

B]Coach:[/B] Eugene Eloff
Captain: Andre Pretorius

Notable players:
And this is what gets me...this team has some incredible players, quite a few are Springboks (the SA national rugby team)...they still suck (technical term)
Andre Pretorius
Pieter van Niekerk ( aka Knee Jerk)
Ernst Joubert
Conrad Jantjes

The Cheetahs

The Central Cheetahs, known for sponsorship reasons as Vodacom Cheetahs, entered the competition in 2006. The franchise area encompasses the Free State, Griffons, and Griquas Currie Cup unions.
They play home games at Vodacom Park in Bloemfontein.

The Cheetahs was one of the two new franchises in 2006, the other being Australia's Western Force. In its first season the Cheetahs did surprisingly well, finishing tenth in the final standings, out of 14 sides.

B]Coach:[/B] Eugene Eloff
Captain: Juan Smith

Notable players:
Ollie le Roux (scary dude)
CJ van der Linde
...and only because of his name....Tiger Mangweni! too cool.

I choose to support the Under...um...Cat...so I hope The Cheetahs do well again this year.

Right that's it.
If I was really good and fair, I'd write other stuff like player positions and stats, etc but I'm not in the mood.

May the best team win the 2007 Super 14.

Go The Brumbies!!!!

Information taken from Wikipedia and from What I Know.
Snide remarks...all me.
Larkham references...not many.

Dusk,
is there any sort of bickering over names like in AFL over black and white stripes and that sort of thing?

Funny stuff, your partiality is humourous - that's all I can ask.

Don't get me started on how delicious maliciousness is.

Sitting here in cheekless chaps, loving your posts.

Be like a wee without an e and two legs(ll).

giNORMous...

How wonderful to see you Swee' Pea...Olive Oyl of your words to me...

Nah...Rugby people bicker over more important stuff like length of socks and how loose or tight jerseys should be...

Oh I'm not malicious...I was just torn that way...

Cheekless Chaps?
Oh Norm...David will swoon...unless you're talking about gaunt faced men...

You...ParaNORMal.

Dusk,

Limpopo Province....I love it. That may well be my favourite province from now on!!

And the Banana Boys??? Sounds like a group parodying the Beach Boys!

Ash hon...

Percival Montgomery is a man to be admired.
With a name like that ("why mum? whyyyyy?") and a face like that...
He's got balls playing rugby.

But seriously (I have my moments)...he is a pretty damn good player, despite his pretty boy looks, he is tough and is SA's leading points scorer.
He's really fast too...well, he'd have to be....with a name like Percy and a face like that....

Yep he is, from what I remember of my rugdy watching days - along with Henri Honiball I think, pretty good too. Shame poor old Percy - he gets grief in South Africa too!
