This is a biased look at Rugby (from a Gamma point of view...hence the fuschia) and I make no apologies for that. Go The Wallabies! Go The Brumbies!...and ouch...Stephen Larkham...

Did Anyone watch 'The Chaser's War....' last night?

October 18th 2007 04:17
I've been waiting all day for someone to post something or say something because face it... give a blogger bone and they'll have to pick it and pick it and pick it!

So...did anyone watch last night's 'The Chaser's War On Everything" and if so...did that song go too far?

Apparently so...but get this...the ABC says they only received 6 calls before 9am today concerning last night's program and 3 were positive.

An ABC spokesman said there had been more callers since then, but that they had been incited by a Melbourne talkback radio presenter. When asked, many of the callers said they hadn't seen the show.

It's actually headline news today.

Must be a slow news day.

Check full news story out here: - ninemsn

I don't always watch this show. We tend to switch off after Spicks and Specks now that The Glasshouse has shattered.

The Chaser boys are funny sometimes, their sketches are funny, their straight to camera spiels not so funny, their road testing ads segments have me in stitches (what can I say?) but they do get boring plus they're such publicty whores.

I was cringing at this song because it is offensive. However it didn't offend me. I, along with all other Chaser viewers, know what to expect when watching this show. I know not to expect anything other than what they deliver.

Here's the song. You have been warned.

Bloody hilarious! I think you need to take it in the spirit it is intended -- a PR generating machine

You have to admit though -- it is genius..

I must agree with Harry. Glad he stopped at Belinda Emmett though!

I really like the Chasers, especially when they take the p*** out of current affairs shows and when they do their ad road tests. And Julian Morrows' segments! So funny.

Just saw 'they better not sing about rugby' at the top, Dusk. HAHAHA.

Well, they've been warned...

I heard Neil Mitchell rabitting on about this on the morning radio.
He played the song and I nearly died laughing.
Then he told his listeners to ring ABC now and complain.

Now you know who the Chaser's may target next.

Neil Mitchell creates the circumstances of being his own joke.

pity...missed the show...I'll check it out on Friday and make a belated and much ignored comment!

and I agree, a lot of their stuff is getting too stale...the same jokes re-launched on another 'victim'....I'm sooo sick of the carpet salesman spruiker guy...bit like those crap shows that set people up and scare them...

Hi Harry...

Oh I can't deny it's hilarious...that it is! I was cringing but forgot to mention...was in hysterics!

..but yes..a PR generating machine. Maybe the Chaser crew is looking for overseas syndication.

Thanks for coming by Harry. Hope you're well.

Hi Michaelie...

That Belinda Emmett bit was a set-up...to prove that even they have a limit!
That would have been in very very bad taste.

I liked CNNNN better...sometimes Chaser gets a bit...much.
The ad road-tests are the funniest segments for me. The last one I saw was where they did this rolling everywhere thing...can't remember the ad...but I found it hysterical because that ad annoys me!

Oh and this one segment about "what if life was like a musical"...they broke out into song at an RTA! I found that very funny because I've always wondered about that...you know...walking through a shopping centre singing and then everyon starts singing with you and then the dancing starts and...I'll stop now!

As for the short title...well...I wouldn't find it funny then!

Thanks for coming by Michaelie. Have always wanted to say (if that's you in your blog tag pic), what a great smile you have.

...and it's called the Dead Song!

I might watch next week to see what happens to Neil Mitchell.

Thanks for coming by Damo

Hi Dusk

I don`t watch the show but I have heard about some of the stints that they get up to. I just listened to the song... I don`t really find it funny to be honest.

From the point of view that all of the people mentioned have family and friends and, as I`m sure they would be, I would certainly be outraged if that was someone near and dear to me.

I get the point they were trying to make, but in my opinion they crossed the line here. By the sounds of things they intended to stir things up and from what I`ve heard all day they struck gold!

Different strokes for different folks though - that`s what makes the world go 'round

Hope you are well

Hugs

Ash

Come on now...don't be like that...I know I have ben 'ignoring' comments that have been very kindly and respectfully left on some of my posts but I really need to to sleep sometime!!
...actually I think i know the one you mean...and OH GOD...I thought I had responded after I received the "how a woman's mind works' thing...I'm so sorry...

In my defense I have left postscripts on my posts to say I am unable to respond, etc, etc die to being blah blah rhubarb....but I do feel bad...

What the world needs now is love sweet love...and new material.

Good to 'see' you hon...

That's the thing with the Chasers now though, isn't it? Pushing all boundaries to get a reaction from people. There were a couple I totally disagreed with and found unfunny but other times, it's kind of like 'Well, he's only saying what other people are thinking'. But I do agree that at least they stopped with Belinda Emmett.

I love it

I hear a different version of this ages ago on ABC when it was in the perfoamance mentioned in the article.

If I died and had a song like this about me, my olife would not have been in vain.

You don't know how tempted I was to write about this but ended up being too busy today to write anything.
I am glad you wrote about it.

The same the media that condemns the Chaser's has engaged in hatchet jobs for years.

Pick up any tabloid and you get the paparazzi shot of some ones butt or mishaped boobs.

Today Tonight condemned the Chasers tonight. Just last week they lost case where they used illegally obtained centrelink information against Michelle Corby. The evidence also proved to be false.

Kerry Packer had the same habit as his father of visiting brothels and kept a wife and a mistress. Yes his servant did give him a kidney.

Stan (the man) was a xenophobic stirer. That would stoop to any level to slander people and races.

I hope they do push this issue hard and we can all see where the chips fall.

The only way I get reminded is by the email thang that says someone posted a comment...so I look at it...umm...anyhoo...no just fooling just ignore my emotionally self indulgent waffle...here today...gone tomorrow...gone gone..

Yes....well....I don't think that anyone forgets these things about 'said people', so I do think that the song is a little disrespectful purely because these people don't exactly have the right of reply now do they.

Stopping at Belinda Emmett doesn't excuse what they said about the others. And if they feel the need to put that whole 'stop at Belinda Emmett' gimmick in then I think the Chaser boys themselves think they went too far and it looks like a bit of damage control.

I hear what Damo says and agree that 'sins' should not be forgotten but honestly, when does the sanitised version of these people's lives come to the fore....just after they've died and emotions are running high.

If the Chaser boys want to take cheap shots at racing car drivers for the environment, Brockie is hardly doing any damage now is he? Why not have a go at the live ones.

I could go on, but I won't.

Maybe the Chaser boys should read Mis' recent posts.

Love & stuff
Mrs M

Hey Dusk,

I thought that was a set up... I saw on Today Tonight or something that they used the song somewhere else first? Still bloody hilarious, I maintain. I agree with Brenton:

If I died and had a song like this about me, my olife would not have been in vain.

I think the rolling was for the Foxtel ad. Hadn't seen (noticed) it before Chasers but have seen it since. LOVED the musical number in RTA.

And yes, that is me, laughing. Didn't know what else to put! Glad you like it!

I didn't watch the episode as I was working on a rather hellish assignment, so thank you for posting the video, Dusk. I had heard about the controversy, and the song was much as I expected from the Chaser Boys.
I think the song did cross the line into bad taste, but it does raise some interesting points, and the fact that it is being discussed at all is exactly what I imagine the boys wanted.

I do wish they would make more of a return into political satire though; I get tired of the stunts.

Hope you are well Dusk,

Nina

Well of course John Howard would find it despicable. You pick on anyone. Anyone. But not the Don. If he could, I'm sure Johnny would have had the Don stuffed and kept in his loungeroom (well, actually, Jeanette would probably be booted out of bed to make way for the Don).

I didn't find it particularly offensive. I actually think it's ridiculous the way people are made out to be absolute saints after death. Why can't people be remembered as they were, flaws and all? I don't think that's disrepectful.

I must say, I haven't watched the Chaser lately. I like their political satire stuff, and some of their segments, but it's all just a little too focused these days on stunts.

Hope you have a good weekend (and find a way to work it so that both Sth Africa and England manage to lose the final on Sunday morning....surely there has to be a way!!)

Some dude in the Courier Mail nailed it - 'If you think it's about these celebrities, you've missed the pint - it's about how we as society gloss over all the nasty bits after somebodies death. And that's ridiculous enough to warrent sending up.'

The Chasers are a bit like one of those smorgasbord buffets really.

There's stuff that's just plain wrong, there's stuff that you love and there's stuff that's well . . . just stuff!

You know it's not necessarily high class dining - but you keep going back.

This was easily the funniest thing I have ever seen on Australian TV. Absolutely awesome that they went after people the media normally adores.

Going after Lady Di and Steve Irwin was gold..I am a massive fan of John Lennon and Jeff Buckley but there was truth in the words...

I did think they should have followed through on Belinda Emmett and cut off at Mother Teresa...so i guess they didn't go far enough for me, but still a great start and bloody hilarious

I just reread my comment and I forgot to mention that I did actually find the song funny and quite clever...

JohnDoe, did you see the segment on The Daily Show recently that talked about Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize? Mother Theresa was certainly not off-limits in that one - here's the link

I watched it and as usual, the Chaser boys gave the strength of the old pelvic floor muscles a good testing! It was Hansen Gold!!! Particularly enjoyed the references to Kerry and Jamie P, and Stan Zemanek. It was a classic case of, “It’s funny ‘cos it’s true”, to use an Homerism. If people felt it was too much, it’s because the truth in the Chaser’s pranks makes them uncomfortable. That is the point.
Howard shouldn't complain. According to Hansen's theory, even he “will be a top bloke in the end”. Think of all the tax-payers money that could be saved through not having to get Public Servants to rewrite history via Wikipedia? Just wait for the inevitable, John! The rest of us are...
Harsh, I know, but like Indigenous Aussies, I really want to hear that word, too...
Retirement. But I will be satisfied if the nation "climbs a stairway to Kevin", and if that other great ABC personality, Maxine, boots him out of Bennelong!
Howard can’t complain about their humour, and then rip off one of their gags. Either. When he said the debate tomorrow night would be redundant as they were only debating the one economic policy (a reference to the Rudd “New Leadership” campaign juxtaposed with statements of support for Coalition policy), he even grinned at the punchline!
