Wallabies not Walla-babies; They Can Wallow If They Want To
November 30th 2006 23:37
This is ridiculous.
And yes, it’s a bit of late news but better late than never...decided I had to post it because well...it’s a bit rough...especially after the night they had...
These are grown men, sure they’re expected to be Role Models and they’re paid handsomely for the privilege of being sporting icons...ahh damn...I’m being polite. Look they’re rugby players, Australian rugby players, World Champions...they’re The Wallabies...as far as I’m concerned they can do no wrong (just not above the law and the laws of humanity).
This is what occurred after the Wallabies v Italy match;
From www.rugbyheaven.smh.com.au
Wallabies captain Stirling Mortlock has confirmed he was among a group of three players who were disciplined after returning late to the team hotel following the Italy Test in Rome.
There was talk among the Wallabies' selection panel that the three offending players should be dropped from the Test team. But this was regarded by Wallabies coach John Connolly as a gross overreaction, as he said the players had not been involved in any incident and were guilty only of returning to the team hotel on Sunday morning later than they should have.
Although for the second day running Connolly refused to name the three offending players, Mortlock admitted he was one of the trio.
"I was one of the guys who came home late," he said. "My initial intentions was to go out and look after the boys. Unfortunately I got home later than I planned to, and I was not intoxicated at all. I just got home late. Obviously, as a captain, it was a poor example, and it has been dealt with internally. This matter was a minor incident, dealt with internally and that's how it should stay."
Hello?
Talk about Boot Camp.
Just a reminder...the Wallabies v Italy match was not pretty. We may have won the match but we lost some credibility (not according to me).
If some of The Wallabies wanted to go out and drown a bit of their misery (because not only were they disappointed in themselves and for their fans but they knew the malign-out was coming...) then what's the problem?
The fact that they didn't go out and throw fettucine around the piazza (what?) says volumes. Alcohol and being down in the dumps, not a good equation...which is why I only drink when I'm happy...and I'm happy all the time...oops...
Anywayy...all they were guilty of was coming back to their hotel room late. And they would have been dropped from the team for that?
I understand the need for strict rules but surely they can be treated like adults, like men, like humans and be allowed to bend the rules occasionally?
They pay for the privelege of being Wallabies with their brains and their bodies...not their souls.
Thank goodness sanity prevailed and they weren't dropped...but I'm sure there was much tension in the air...which is probably why they didn't play so well in the next match...against Ireland...I don't want to talk about it.
I'd like you all to note the complete lack of Stephen Larkham references. See, I can write a post without once referring to Stephen Larkham. It is possible for me to write about rugby or non-rugby without sighing. Over Stephen Larkham.

I was so proud of you, so proud ...
... until that last little bit, that is.
Only you can manage to fit three references to SL in the space of three and a bit lines.
It's pretty ridiculous, isn't it, the way they treat our best sports stars, Like you say, they are grown men, not children, so the 'powers-that-be' should pull their heads in and get a life.
How many times have we heard about role models doing the wrong thing and hardly getting more than a slap on the knuckles for it. Then three rugby idols get home late (oh, heaven forbid) and they are threatened with being dropped.
Bloody stupid.

On a different tangent...I have just posted quite possibly the dumbest thing I have ever written...not this one, my latest post...
Will speak with you soon...am Russian...it's Friday...Moscow...will be back...
