Yo Danny Bhoy o boy a trew Scot!
June 14th 2007 06:03
Yes that is his real name and no, he's not Irish* and yes he is brilliant.....and a favourite of a few Orblers (Nina?!).
Although I have seen him 'in action' before, I just had to see him perform again. My darling friend and I went to see him last night at the Sydney Opera House and I spent 1 and a half hours trying not to fall out of my chair!
I'm really rather embarrassing to be with when I'm watching something funny.
I am not a quiet laugher. I'm one of those people that just really cannot control the snorts, giggles, cackles bubbling over! I was in hysterics throughout!...and in awe.....
I'm not sure if this is a good movie but it's certainly a favourite of mine...'Punchline' (1988) Sally Field and Tom Hanks.
from www.imdb.com
A favourite because it shows why Stand Up Comedy is a hard medium.
And a fantasy of mine. No. Not a clairvoyant on viagra...sheesh. Being a stand up comedian (comedienne?).
Well okay not fantasy but something I want to be when I grow up. Other than taller and an adult.
A finely tuned sense of humour is for me, the sexiest attribute a person can have. Man or Woman. And if you can make people laugh....and laugh at yourself (not your own jokes... you)....Wow. Double Wow.
It's fairly easy to make people cry but to trigger the funny bone and keep them laughing? Difficult.
We can all rage or cry or despair at the same issues/points but humour?...one persons wit is another persons twit. To be able to make an audience of 300 all laugh at the same joke is pretty serious business.
It's not just about the punchline (although yes, that's a big part), it's about the delivery. The timing. The priming.
Danny had us at "hello...Opera House box office, how may I help you?"
Even when he was not 'doing funny' but just being...he was funny.
He had us so firmly (yet subtly) in the palm of his hand, a palm reader would have thought he had hundreds of personalities...
I could have used another analogy there but...different strokes for different folks....
We were ready to laugh at anything he said or did...we even laughed when he had a drink of water! And it wasn't funny! It just was!
Danny Bhoy is enjoying the success he is because of his ability to connect with his audience. He doesn't joke down. Yes he uses profanity but he is not vulgar. And, like all good performers, he has the ability to become the audience. He recounts tales that are familiar to us all. He grasps the cultural nuances. He is an excellent mimic and his accents are spot-on.
He is also very good at the ol' going off on another tangent and then bringing it back home tactic.
It also helps that he's rather easy on the eye...hard on the stomach muscles though!
(and tell me Women...does a man 'become' witty because he's attractive or are all witty men attractive? I ask because even though DDH is my emotional, mental, physical 'ideal' -and I was gone the moment I met him- his wit is what sealed the deal... )
Danny dresses casually, makes self deprecating jokes (about how unpretentious he is standing on a stage at the Sydney Opera House) and is so humble yet...to do this...to get up on stage, no props** and just wander around and be completely uninhibited and know that he is the sole reason why everyone is there.... he has to be supremely confident.
And completely aware of who he is.
This is Danny performing on The Sideshow - ABC Australia - 02/06/07.
One of the tales he told was of his Ballarat experience....read more here;
To read a bit about Danny's background, here's what Wikipedia has to say.
And yes...he's a Rugby fan.
*One of his famous quotes:
"I am Danny Bhoy and I am Scottish, not Irish as most of you seem to think I am but to help you tell the difference, this is a Scottish person talking. An Irish person would say (high pitched) 'Fiddle-dee-dee, potatoes!'" —Danny Bhoy
**those bagpipes?
Think something to sit on that rhymes with school.
No. Not a tool.....

Steven Gold is a stand-up comedian who is flat broke and has recently dropped out of medical school. He and several others work regularly at the Gas Station, a New York comedy club. The wages are lousy and everybody hopes for the big break. Lilah Krytsick is housewife with an ambition to be a stand-up comedian, however she doesnt seem to have the talent. Steven takes her under his wings and teaches her the art of comedy and humour. But when a TV station arranges a comedy evening at the club, Steve sees his opportunity for fame and stardom. Their friendship seems quickly forgotten and now it's every man and woman for him- or herself!
And a fantasy of mine. No. Not a clairvoyant on viagra...sheesh. Being a stand up comedian (comedienne?).

There go my dreams down the drain of being the first sit-down, lie-down comedian.
You make an interesting observation regarding the physical appearance of comedians (with subtle references to the physical appearance of non-comedians. Physical attraction is a part of life).
It took me a while to warm to Seinfeild due to his appearance. (Only because he reminded me of someone at my school who thought he was funny but wasn't). But once I got over my own prejudices? I now regard Seinfiled as one of the funniest guys on the planet.
This guy
lookssounds great. I'm turning gay (again).David ...

DEBATABLE CONVERSATIONS...
I too fall hard and fast, for above all - a good, witty, intelligent, clever, laugh till you drop on the floor sense of humour.....I am in love to the point of obsession with Jim Carrey, Rowan Atkinson (esp. in the WW1 series of Blackadder), Hugh Laurie, Lano and Woodley - see, those last two get me all girly and giggly on the insides - because in their honest approach to being funny, to show their vulnerable side, (which is what you are doing when you purposely make yourself look stupid for the sake of also looking funny - and doing it well....have I put a fullstop anywhere in this paragraph yet....probably not...i am too excited....I love comedians...
Yes...funny makes sexy....
Okay, going to look at your links now...oh danny......(I once kissed a boy called Danny from the UK back in the late 80's...........I wonder..........)

He does have great stage presence and a wicked cool accent, but other than that, and his great sense of humor, of course, he really doesn't do much for me in the "sexy" category. I dunno why... Funny as can be, though....
Thanks for the midnight "snack". *smiles*

I did write a few lines about you.
...but I thought it best to leave it out just in case others took offense at something complimentary about you.
Not that that's ever happened before.
It's a happy community we have here. No jealousy, no vitriol, no profanity on the popular list.....
Something along the lines of yeah sure, you're brilliant and a writer/poet par excellence and going by your blogtag pic, 'easy on the eye' but...it's your damn wicked wit that makes you sexy!
[and for God's sake people, yes I'm in love, yes I'm married to whom I'm in love with but I can still appreciate another man's sex appeal without there being a motive and an undercurrent. sheesh]
Hmmm...okay....now I think Jerry Seinfeld is not attractive. But then I don't find his humour funny. Not all the time.
Robin Williams (when he does ad lib/stand up) is just sexy!
I love that quicksilver wit and manic energy...plus he loves Rugby...hmm....it always boils down to that for me!!

Exactly!...this is what I was trying or meant to say about Danny...and other performers, actors, etc... you cannot be inhibited in any way...but it's not exhibitionism...it's vulnerability.
Rowan as Blackadder; sexy!
Rowan as Mr Bean; no, just...no.
Hugh Laurie yes but I've only really seen him in interviews...and I really like the character Dr Cox in 'Scrubs'....not sure if the actor who portrays him is as funny.
Yes...funny makes sexy....
Absolutely!
Thanks for coming by Kerryn...

Oh my word I LOVE this bloke he is hilarious... I saw his show where he did the crack about the accent differences... too funny!
Thanks for the laugh! Is man more attractive because he it witty? Definitely! Although this one doesn`t need to be witty ~grin~ he has that certain naughty twinkle in his eye and the accent... oh my word that`s enough to get any toes curling!

Glad to help..unintentional though it was!
(and I'm not being facetious!)
Gotta tell ya...it doesn't sound very restful for you in Lost Vegas (not a typo)...
As for Danny not doing it for you...I completely understand...physically he's not what I consider 'attractive' but to see him perform live ... and this is true of any man that has a great sense of timing and wit...he's just really sexy because he's so damn funny!
It's something about having the confidence of executing a great line coupled with a wicked glint...
Plus I'm a sucker for a Scottish accent!
I don't know...for me...humour is just what 'grabs' me.
It's like I can look at someone and not feel a thing or think that they're beautiful but if they make me laugh...a real take me by surprise and dry my eyes laugh...then they become hotter than hot!
...and in the case of DDH...when I first saw him...I was already
salivatingattracted because physically he is my 'ideal'...but then we spoke and then I laughed and I was a goner...Aneewayyy.
Hope you get some sleep Lioness, hope the boys came back...good to see you over my way...
much warmth

I know exactly what you're saying about humor, and if I could see Danny live, I might very well share your opinion.
Switching pillow sides didn't seem to do it, either... it might just be the energy of the city, stress over the obstacles I'm facing, and excitement over the reasons i'm here in the first place. I dunno.... I did seem to get a few decent hours of sleep last night... not many, but a few.
The kids came in just after midnight, so I was in bed by one... up by five. I've got half the crew currently showering and changing, the other half waiting patiently for their turns. *smirks*
Much Respect,

I have to agree with everything you said about him - every little thing he does is hilarious, even the things that shouldn't really be funny. His connection with the audience is immediate and strong, and his ability to keep us with him on his stories and tangents is amazing. I can't wait until I get a chance to see him again, although I will be disappointed if I'm not as close as last time...
Wishing you a day of laughter,

THis fellow is a gem, no doubts about him...and what a lovely looking young man... You are right, humour in a man is about one third of the appeal, isn't it... it usually means he's seen a fair bit of life and knows what's what... not always easy to live with, but sure interesting.*lol*
Thanks for the early morning tonic.

Hugh Laurie ws in quite a few of the blackadder series, he played a loonie King in one series, and a Luitenant (sp?), Sergent? in the WW1 series - very funny man. In his early days, way way before his creation as 'House' - he also appeared frequently in a show called "Whose Line Is it Anyway" - a few of these shows appear on Youtube....have a look if you get the chance.......I find him another 'funny sexy'....

You know girlfriend...can I utilize my professional skills here? We mirror in others strengths in ourselves... No wonder you find humor sexy.... You are one of the funniest people I have ever known (read?). So I am guessing you must be pretty sexy.... Guess hubby adores that too!

I really like that in a comedian. I don't like being patronized.
And, like all good performers, he has the ability to become the audience.

The trick is to make them laugh so hard they come out the other side crying. Danny does that - hysterical!
I had a similar Opera House experience with Billy Connolly. Aside from the cultural influences that that make the Scots funny, I think the accent goes a long way. Billy could have said anything that night and I would have been laughing... a least a little... the gold material is where it gets even better!
And if you ever get a chance, go see Carl Barron live... it's a different kind of humour, but the's the only other comic who has had me in tears from go to whoa.
And just for the record - a sense of humour is possibly the sexiest thing going. Not just being able to make people laugh, but being able to laugh... getting jokes...
All the best, Dusk - hope your stomach muscles heal soon!
